DESCRIPTION:We celebrated Nurses Day on the 14th Of May 2024. \nThe 12th of May is a historical day where Nurses are celebrated all over the world. \nThe 12th of May was on a Sunday\, we at WCRC celebrated Nurses Day on the 14th Of May 2024. \nWe had some guests attending\, our Executive members of the facility\, representatives from Old Mutual\, Sanlam\, Nursing Agencies. \nOur Facility Board was the main sponsor of the event and we as nurse are very grateful to have the support of our facility board. \nThe theme for Nurses day was: Our Nurses. Our Future. The Economic power of Care. \nThe highlight of the event was to celebrate our Nurses and to salute them for their for their unselfish giving\, bravery\, dedication\, and commitment to save lives. \nNurses are the backbone of any hospital\, and strength of pillars to patients who are in need of care. \nAfter the event\, nurses commended on the great day they had\, they felt appreciative\, acknowledged and worthy of their profession. \nThey felt inspired by the speaker\, our own CEO\, Ms. Fatima Peters that stated that Nurses are there from the day you open your eyes\, until the day you die. \nWhen a baby is born\, the nurse are with you\, a nurse is sometimes the last person you see. This reality was so appreciated by the Nurses that their CEO can make such a bold statement\, it was well appreciated.

SUMMARY:The Outeniqua Chair Challenge Wheelchair Race
DESCRIPTION:WCRC takes on The Outeniqua Chair Challenge: \nThe Outeniqua Chair Challenge in an annual wheelchair race that takes place In George\, Westen Cape. It is best known as the “biggest wheelchair race in Africa” and on the 24th of February 2024 we got to partake in this prestigious race. \nAfter years of not participating due to the Covid-19 pandemic\, we assembled the WCRC Hot-wheelerz to be a part of this amazing experience. We had a group of eight eager and competitive patients (both in and outpatients) and eight volunteers partaking. After months of planning\, preparation\, training\, and a world class send off from our WCRC family we were off to races. \nGeroge treated us well\, the atmosphere was vibrant and the excitement amongst our patients palpable as they not only raced for themselves but also for disability advocacy as a whole. It was an eye-opening experience for us all filled with hope and opportunity for a better tomorrow. The Team participated in the 5km fun-walk\, and we are very proud to proclaim that we had a few first time WCRC Hot-wheelerz coming in the top 50 out of hundreds of races! Witnessing hundreds of wheelchair users taking over the streets of George was a reminder of why we at WCRC believe in being the changemakers and empowering the changemakers of tomorrow. \nA big thank you to our executive team\, our facility board and most importantly our WCRC family for their unwavering support for allowing the volunteers the opportunity to make this happen. DESCRIPTION:Annually South Africa commentates and highlights the plight of people with disabilities from the 3 November-3 December\, this is known as Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM). The month culminates on the 3rd of December which is also International Day for persons with disabilities. Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre put together a short programme on the 1st December 2023 for its inpatients to celebrate this day. The programme sort to motivate current patients on their rehabilitation journey\, 2 short motivational talks where given by ex-patients\, namely Karin Coetzee\, who suffered a stroke and still has residual speech fallout and Sihle Fela who suffered a Spinal Cord injury. Both highlighted their rehabilitation journey and re-integration into the community and highlighted that one’s disability does not limit you from living a purposeful and meaningful life. Ex-patient Zakariyah Torien\, who was diagnosed with Gillian Barre syndrome rendered a musical item was inspiration. \nBy: DRAM Committee 2023

SUMMARY:Occupational Therapy Day
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate International Occupational Therapy Day 27 October 2023\, the Occupational therapy team from the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre participated in an off-site team-building event. The theme for 2023\, “Unity Through Community\, Embracing the Change\,” was particularly significant as the OT department has undergone many changes. This event was an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate these changes while fostering a sense of unity among our team. In true OT style\, we embraced participation in an activity at Clay Cafe\, engaging in a creative painting session that embodied the spirit of being\, doing\, becoming and belonging. It was the first off-site gathering in to celebrate international OT day for the OT group\, allowing us to reconnect and strengthen bonds\, which is vital for optimal team functioning. SUMMARY:Mental Health Day
DESCRIPTION:World mental health day is celebrated annually on 10 October. The day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. \nIn October 2023 WCRC’s Psychology Department planned activities and a competition focused on staff health and wellness.\nStaff were invited to attend wellness talks focused on 3 topics: ‘Strategies for becoming your best and healthiest self’\, ‘How food affects your mood’\, and ‘Reassessing your goals and dreams’. The aim was to raise awareness and have people see that we can take small steps to improving our mental health by just committing to a small and manageable action each day. \nStaff were divided into teams and invited to create displays\, with a chance to win prizes. \nTeams were asked to create a display which focused on “Practical ways to improve mental health in daily life”. The creativity and innovation went beyond expectation! \nThe winning team\, Therapy 2\, created their display around the idea “make a date with yourself” which highlighted the importance of prioritizing mental health.
